I-35 & FM 3009 Traffic headaches soon to ease up?!
I-35 Selma - Schertz - Cibolo | Road/Ramp Closures
This project is finally finished...but is it great to look at what to expect when TXDOT comes into town.
Wow July 1, 2014 (I had 2015 in as a typo and almost left it...)
Well, now we hear mid August. Things are looking good, but there is still a porta potty in the south to north turn around at 3009. You will know everything is close with the permanant stripping is finished. You will notict that it is reflective and slightly raised. An end is in sight, but the test will be when school starts to see if all this pain was worth it....and if there is any doubt how far down the TXDoT priority list this is, just look at Josh's blog. No mention of us in weeks, so watch the VMB's and be ready to take a different route! We will know it is finished when the porta potty is removed!
And maybe closer May 2014
Today at Northeast partnership TXDOT said that the I-35 project should be complete. Watch for lane closures and realigned exits especailly in the Cibolo and Schertz area.
Getting Closer! January 12, 2014
Tonight the crews were out to close exit 175 on Northbound I-35. This was scheduled last Fall, so a little history.
The Memorial Day flood diverted many construction teams to repair projects with a higher priority. There was also a design flaw in the ribbon overpass to Forum Parkway. As anyone that lives or needs to use the I-35 and FM-3009 intersection knows, the traffic was awful for many, many months. And we now know how Cinderella felt. I was very frustrated and start to try and get this project back on track. I even got to draft the resolution that the Northeast Partnership, the Mayors of the nine local cities, sent to TxDot and the construction company to get the North-South Turnaround open and the double left turn lanes back by Christmas. Despite some terrible weather, they were finally able to get that project finished to the point that we could use new turnaround and the left turn lanes. The work kept going and there were even crews there the day after Christmas working to finish the rest of the project.
You may have noticed that there had been a variable message sign saying that this exit was to be closed the coming Sunday for weeks and weeks. It was put off supposedly because of rain. I have some other ideas, like diverting workers to the Forum, but that would be another blog. The work that needs to be done for this closure, by contract, has to be finished in 21 days. The sign said every-other time that the were going to take three weeks adn this time only two weeks. I have made a few inquiries and there really isn't an answer as to why they are announcing only a two week closure. The good news is that there is a significant penalty in the contract if they don't finish this part in 21 days.
UPDATED 22 October 2013: Well, for those waiting for the 3009/I-35 to be finished, you can now say you understand what Cinderella felt like! First the Memorial Day floods took our crews away and now the push is to get the exits at the Forum complete before holiday shopping kicks into high gear combined with lots of rain (which we can't complain about, yet) has deverted our crews yet again. Luckily I have found many ways around using 3009, but can't wait for it to be finished. There is some good news. This Sunday looks like we will finally see the closure of the northbound exit to 3009. That is good, because by contract, it can only be closed for 3 weeks. That is also good, becuase the reworking of that exit needs to be completed as part of the 3009 project and opening of the turnarounds. So the end is in sight. When Josh said that they wanted it finished by the 4th of July and I asked what year, people laughed. Well...I will predict we will see great things by New Year's Day, you can decide what year! (note holiday themed coloring for this text)
UPDATED 28 June 2013: More good news. The ramps will start opening the week of the 8th. YEAH! The 3009 turnarounds are now to be finished either late July or early August. Again we love our rain, except for when it comes to completing projects.
UPDATED 10 June 2013: GREAT NEWS. I just got an email from Josh at TXDot. They are trying to have all the closed ramps and the turn arounds at FM 3009 and I-35 open in July! I know that we need to pray for rain for other reasons, but just a few days that it rained when they were not trying to work would be outstanding. They have poured the foundation for the approaches on the Northern Turnaround, so lets keep our fingers crossed.
Many of you in the north part of the Radonlph AFB and Metrocom Areas have noticed some changes along I-35. In response to all the questions I have heard, I have gathered some of the information on the lane and ramp closures and realignment taking place from 1604 in Live Oak through Selma and Schertz and ending in Cibolo form TxDot.gov and AlamoRMA web sites. You can click their names to go directly to their sites for more information.
There are graphics at the bottom!
First, The semi permanant, or so it feels, closrues:
South-bound on-ramp from Schertz Parkway
-Closed until early 2013 while crews turn it into an off-ramp. Next Ramp is in Selma.
-Closed until early 2013 while crews turn it into an on-ramp. Schertz Parkway will be closed at times too, so to be safe exit 3009 until the turn around there is also closed.
-Closed until early 2013 while crews turn it into an off-ramp. This will be fun through the Holidays while all traffic has to cross Forum Parkway to that on ramp.
-Closed until early 2013 while crews turn it into an off-ramp. This will vary, but usually 3009 will be the next for sure entrance.
North-bound off-ramp to Schertz Parkway (starting Tuesday night)
Watch for Variable message boards that will tell you want exits are open and which are closed!
